As of today, trans fats are illegal in Canada.
Specifically banned are partially hydrogenated oils, or PHOs, which are the main source of industrially produced trans fats in all food sold in the country.
The new rules make it illegal for manufacturers to use the additive in any food made or imported into Canada, and also any meals prepared in restaurants. Stores can still sell food with trans fats for the next 2 years, as long as they were manufactured before today’s date.
