Loretta Lynn’s Granddaughter Performs “Coal Miner’s Daughter” On American Idol
The Granddaughter of the late country legend Loretta Lynn is on American Idol this season.
24 year old Emmy Russell has made it to the final seven contestants on the show. Russell pulled the heartstrings of not just viewers but her family on the most recent episode of Idol. For the first time on the show she performed her grandmother Loretta Lynn’s classic song “Coal Miner’s Daughter” for the judges.
The song was chosen for Russell as a part of the judge contest on Idol. Each judge suggested a song for the contestants to perform and the contestant chose from the three options which to sing in front of the judges on show day.
Judge Katy Perry suggested “Coal Miner’s Daughter” for Russell to perform.
“I choose this song not because Loretta Lynn is your grandma,” Judge Katy Perry said, as her she sheds some tears. “I choose this song because you are Emmy Russell, and you can do anything now as Emmy Russell.”
Emmy Russell was also very emotional throughout the performance but prevailed and gave a performance that would have made her grandmother proud.
